It’s kind of hard to see unless you turn in the mirror at just the right angle, but your butt is doing a lot more than just looking fabulous in those skinny jeans. In fact, your glutes which are made up of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus, help you every day in every way. From climbing a flight of stairs to supporting your lower back, this powerhouse set of muscles is working hard behind the scenes. And with that in mind, it makes sense to try and strengthen it to keep it strong and doing its job. Here are three of our favorite tried and true exercises that will get your butt in shape…and help it stay that way. And the best part? No fancy equipment is needed.

Bridges

This classic yoga move can be added to your workout and will strengthen your backside in no time flat. To do the bridge move, lie on your back with your knees bent. Squeeze your glutes and abdominal muscles and thrust forward and up, then bring yourself back down to the ground. When you first begin this exercise, just use your own body weight. Once you get used to it, however, add in some weights to create more resistance

Lunges

There are as many different lunges as there are days of the year, but one thing is for sure, lunges are a great way to get your glutes in shape. One of our favorite glute lunging exercises is the walking lunge. Start by stepping one step forward with your right foot as you engage the glutes, core, and hamstrings. Then repeat with your left foot as you slowly continue to “walk.”

Skating

This fun move will transport you back to fun days at the rink as a kid. Start with your feet together and in a crouch position. From here, jump in a horizontal direction as far as you can and end on the ball of your foot. Repeat on the left side and get into a rhythm. If jumping is too difficult or painful, don’t despair! Simply follow the instructions but instead take a giant step from side to side.

These moves will have you getting your butt in gear in no time flat. Try them today and see for yourself what a difference having strong glutes can make in your life.
